Volnay

Overview

After the richness of the wines of Pommard, Volnay presents the epitome of fragrance and elegance, ethereal wines that nevertheless have the structure to age gracefully for years.  If one is looking for charm in Burgundy and relatively early drinking it is hard to go past Volnay, however, the quality is serious, and the village boast some outstanding winemakers.

Classification

Like Pommard there are no Grand Crus in Volnay but also like Pommard they have plenty to offer. 

The northerly vineyards bordering Pommard flow down to the village itself where various small clos abound, mostly monopoles of some of the better vignerons. South are larger Premier Crus that are the best of the commune – notably Clos des Chenes, En Caillerets, En Champans and Taillepieds. Unusually the border of Volnay and Meursault allows for red wines produced in Meursault, notably in the Santenots Premier Cru and Les Plures vineyard, to be labelled “Volnay”.
