Puligny-Montrachet

Overview

The village of Puligny-Montrachet was called just ‘Puligny’ until 1879, when the ‘Montrachet’ name was added in celebration of its most famous vineyard.

The village is home to 17 Premier Cru vineyards, covering 100.12 hectares of land, and four Grand Cru vineyards, which spans 21.30 hectares. The Grand Cru vineyards lie at the southern end of the village, where they overlap into Chassagne, and the Premier Crus lie in a continuation of the Grand Crus and continue upslope on the northern side. As a whole, the village is considerably smaller than neighbouring Meursault and Chassagne. The soils here are, like other top villages on the Cote de Beaune, rich in Burgundian limestone.

Classification

The adjoining appellations of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet share two Grand Cru vineyards of the highest quality (and price): Le Montrachet/Montrachet (note that on the Puligny side, the vineyard is named ‘Montrachet’ whereas on the Chassagne side it is named ‘Le Montrachet’) and Batard-Montrachet.

The Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet vineyards sit wholly within Puligny-Montrachet appellation, while the Criots-Batard-Montrachet vineyard sits wholly within the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. Some producers have holdings in both Puligny and Chassagne.  

Puligny-Montrachet is the home to some of the finest Chardonnay vineyards in the world at both Grand Cru and Premier Cru levels.  The Grand Crus tend to speak for themselves as do many of the Premier Crus.
