Crozes-Hermitage

Overview

Crozes-Hermitage is found on the left bank of the Rhone, to the north, south, and east of the village of Tain l’Hermitage. This is the largest northern Rhone appellation and stretches across 11 communes. The appellation was created in 1937, and in 1952 was increased to its current size.

The climate is semi-continental lots of sunshine and hoot dry summers, and a warming wind constantly blowing from the south. The soil varies from granite and loess in the north, to rounded pebbles and red clay in the south and east. Wines from here tend the be much more fruit-forward and earlier approachable compared to Hermitage’s broodingly concentrated and long lived expressions.

The appellation is mainly planted to Syrah, and to a smaller extent, Roussanne and Marsanne.
