Corton Rouge

Overview

While the Cote d’Or is spoken of as a continuous slope of vines facing east to south-east the “cote” actually peters out at the southern extremes of the Nuits-Saint-George vineyards. Before it begins again at the city of Beaune and the communes of Savigny- and Chorey-les-Beaune the most unique feature of which is the grand, free-standing hill of Corton.

The relatively recent arrival of Domaine de la Romanee and Domaine Ponsot, and the vast improvement of the more historical winemakers here has set the majestic hill of Corton on a new quality trajectory.

Classification

The only red Grand Cru of the Cote de Beaune, Corton’s vineyards wrap around the hill facing from south-east to south then morphing into Corton-Charlemagne as the vignoble turns from south to south-west.

The reds can call themselves simply “Corton” or add the various sub-plots to the name. There is something fascinating and unique about the best wines from around the hill of Corton – both reds and whites. The reds have plumpness of fruit combined with fine structure while the whites balance a sense of opulence with freshness and zest.
