Overview

Located in northeast of Italy at the foot of the western Alps, Piemonte has the greatest claim as the king of Italian wine. Indigenous white varieties such as Nascetta and Timorasso now vie to be among Italy’s best. Barbera and Dolcetto produce some lovely quaffable wines, and much attention is being paid to another indigenous variety, the charming Ruche. However, it is the red and highly tannic and fragrant Nebbiolo variety which reigns supreme amongst the red wines.

Classification

Piedmont has no classification system, and any wine hierarchy is embedded in the appellation system.

Key Grape Varieties

Nebbiolo is the star grape variety of Piedmont, and the grape variety responsible for the region’s greatest wines. The established pinnacle of this variety come from the Langhe – the area surrounding the town of Alba. Across the Tanaro River, from Alba, to the south-west and the east, in the appellations of Barolo and Barbaresco, Nebbiolo ascends to a quality that places it among the greatest red wines on the planet. Gattinara, Ghemme and Lessona, are lesser-known appellations producing beautifully accessible reds.

Food Pairing

Top Nebbiolo works well with a variety of meats like filet steak, Wagyu, Kobi, and game including duck, pigeon, hare, and pheasant. Due to the subtle herbaceous and earthy aromatics, Nebbiolo also tends to work extremely well with tomato-based sauced, and grilled Mediterranean vegetables, mushrooms, and in particular truffles.

Steak tartare also works wonders alongside a good Nebbiolo as does risotto and pasta dishes especially when accessorized with some of the beforementioned. Mild cheeses like hard cow’s, sheep’s or goat’s milk are also a good match.
