Located in the heart of the southern Rhone Valley, east of the river, and in between the towns of Orange and Avignon, the vineyards of the appellation Chateauneuf-du-Pape surrounds the eponymous village and the four adjacent villages of Orange, Courthezon, Sorgues and Bedarrides.

Overview

The name of ‘Chateauneuf-du-Pape’ translates to “new castle of the Pope” and refers to when the town of Avignon, in the 14^th century, was chosen as the new residence of the then incumbent Pope, Clement V. The soils are pebbly and sandy, with varying proportions of limestone and clay. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot and dry summers and wet winters.

Key Grape Varieties

95% of the appellation’s production is red wine, and 5% is dry white wines. A few domaines also make tiny amounts of sweet Vin de Paille. For red wine production, the main varieties are Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre, yet another six red varieties are permitted in the vineyards, including Cinsault, Counoise, Muscardin, Vaccarese, Picpoul Noir, and Terret Noir.

For white wine production the most important grapes are Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, and Bourboulenc, while also permitted are Grenache Gris, Picardin, Picpoul Blanc, Picpoul Gris, and Clairette Rose. White Chateauneuf-du-Pape are wines of opulence, they are full-bodied and generous with pronounced mineral and herbaceous notes. These are wines that age well but also offer voluptuous pleasure from a relatively early age.

Food Pairing

Red Chateauneuf-du-Pape works well with rich meats such as roast duck, pork, beef, and pigeon, especially with Mediterranean accompaniments like dried herbs – rosemary, thyme, oregano – and olive sauce, roasted aubergines, and peppers.

White Chateauneuf-du-Pape pairs well with terrine of foie gras, meaty fish like turbot and halibut, grilled squid and herb crusted sea bass; it is also very good with veal, roast chicken, and rabbit, especially with Mediterranean herbs, anise, roasted fennel, courgette, and endive salad.
