Overview

Famous for producing the arguably finest expressions of Pinot Noir in the world, Cotes de Nuits is named after its principal town, Nuits-St-Georges. This is the northern half of the Cote d’Or (the southern half being Cotes de Beaune), a stretch of vineyards which are thoroughly committed to Pinot Noir, which makes up 95% of the total production.

The principal villages of the Cote de Nuits from north to south are Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeout, Vosne-Romanee, Flagey-Echezeaux, and Nuits-St-Georges. But this is a rather densely packed space with less than 16km between the most southerly town of Nuits-St-Geoges and the most northerly village of Marsannay.

Classification

In each of these village appellations, the sites with the best exposure to the sun and the best soil composition, are classified as Premier Cru and Grand Cru (the latter of which account for less than 1% of Burgundy’s total production). In total we find 24 of Burgundy’s 33 Grand Cru appellations on the Cotes de Nuits and 135 Premier Crus.

While many of the wines in the so-called lesser categories (such as “village wines”) often provide good quality and value, by focusing almost entirely on the Premier and Grand Crus, we, at The Perfect Bottle, offer only a tiny proportion (and the very best) of the wine produced in Burgundy.

Food Pairing

In terms of food pairings, red Burgundy tends to go well with simply cooked meats, especially without too much sauce or heavy charring. Game like pheasant, grouse and duck breast are favourites – for example roasted duck or goose with cranberry sauce for the festive season, or duck confit with caramelized orange. Rack of lamb also works well, as does venison, especially with the more structured styles, from Gevrey and Vosne for example.

Mushrooms, both as accessories but also in risotto and pasta, goes well with red Burgundy’s earthiness, and meaty fish, like monkfish and cod, works well especially when accessorized by for example girolles and red wine-based sauces. Mild cheeses, such as hard cow’s and sheep’s milk, young brie, and goats cheese also works well.
