Grampians

Overview

The Grampians wine region is located in Western Victoria, and is known for the dense, purple floral and peppery styles of Shiraz – which are considered some of the finest in Australia. The Mediterranean climate along with proximity to the Southern Ocean, which provides a cooling influence during the summer, and altitudes ranging from 150 to 1150 meters above sea level means that Grampians is recognised as a cooler climate grape growing region. The region contributed significantly to reviving Australian wine production approximately 70 years ago through a planting resurgence, with several dedicated wine families planting vines that continue to thrive and produce exceptional wines today.

Key Grape Varieties

The principal soil types consist of loamy sands and clay loam. The Grampians wine producing area is 651 hectares and the main varieties grown are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Riesling, but the region is particularly well suited to late ripening Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Top producers include Mount Langi Ghiran.
