Canberra District

Overview

The wine region of Canberra District is in both New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. The climate is continental with very dry spring and summer months.  The district has its own wine specific GI (Geographical Indication) since 1998 and – largely due to the outstanding Clonakilla – is showing increased quality, popularity and (in the case of Clonakilla) worldwide recognition.

Despite being relatively close to the Pacific Ocean (120km to the east), the climate is mostly continental with high variations in temperature depending on the elevation. Most of the region’s best wineries are in the Murrumbateman area, some 30 kilometres northwest of Canberra.

Key Grape Varieties

60% of the vineyards here are planted with red varieties of which the most important are Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. However, there are some plantings of Viognier which are made varietally or blended with Shiraz. Verdelho, Sauvignon Blanc, and Semillon are also gaining in popularity.
