Gigondas

Overview

Gigondas has, over the years, risen from being a source of cheaper, often rustic red wines to today being a source of some of the finest southern Rhone Grenache-based wines.

Located around 17km to the northeast of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, the Gigondas appellation covers the area between the river itself and up into the Dentelles de Montmirail foothills. The soil on the Montmirail foothills is made up of limestone, whereas the flatter land is rocky and sandy.

Key Grape Varieties

Gigondas can produce red- and rose wine, both of which can be made of up to 80% Grenache, with at least 15% combined of Syrah and Mourvedre, while also being allowed up to 10% of any other Cotes-du-Rhone permitted grape variety.

Food Pairings

Full bodied and richly flavoured Gigondas pairs well with hearty foods, like braised meat, sausages, stews, casseroles, and pie. Barbecues is also a great pairing, as is roast duck and turkey, along with Mediterranean accompaniments like dried herbs – rosemary, thyme, oregano – and olive sauce, roasted aubergines, and peppers.
