The producer

The Grasso family has a long and storied history of winemaking, dating back to the late 19th century, but the modern success of the Elio Grasso winery is largely attributed to the work of Elio Grasso, who took over the family estate in the 1970s. The winery places a strong emphasis on the vineyard and its terroir. Elio Grasso follows traditional winemaking practices and believes that the quality of the wine is determined in the vineyard. The estate owns several vineyards, each with its unique characteristics and microclimates. Elio Grasso's wines are often described as elegant and balanced, with a focus on purity of fruit and expression of terroir. The winery's approach allows the natural characteristics of the Nebbiolo grape to shine through.

The wine

Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté is a highly esteemed and iconic wine produced by Elio Grasso. A single-vineyard Barolo, the vineyard is named after the Ginestra flower that grows in the area. It is known for its rich and complex flavour profile. It often features notes of dark fruits, such as blackberry and black cherry, intertwined with floral and spicy aromas. This is a wine that is built for aging. While it can be enjoyed relatively young, its true potential is revealed after several years of bottle aging. It's not uncommon for this wine to age gracefully for decades, developing even more complexity and depth.

Elio Grasso's Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté has received high praise from wine critics and is often considered one of the top Barolos. It's celebrated for its finesse, balance, and its ability to reflect the unique terroir of the Ginestra vineyard.

We choose our wines based on a range of criteria (see how we choose our wines) of which critic scores is just one. Rather than simply highlight the best score to promote a wine, our average critic score is calculated from the scores provided by several respected wine critics, who we follow for specific regions. They do not represent all critic scores and, wherever possible, we try and give more weight to more recent reviews. Where appropriate we consider market-based scores like Global Wine Score or Wine Searcher Average scores.

As a rule, we look to offer wines that achieve a 92/100 average critic score or better and frankly a lot of very good wines simply don’t make the cut. As a high-end provider we want to reflect that positioning in the quality of wines we offer. Such wines are only a tiny fraction of those generally on offer in the market. We believe that an average score is a more conservative and representative approach, but it is still subjective and only offered as a guide to our customers, who will (and should) do their own research. We will add individual critic scores to our website in the future.
