Overview and History
Bordeaux as a wine district dates back at least to Roman times and was continued by the church through the Middle Ages. But its real boom came when Eleanor of Aquitaine married Henry II bringing the entire area under English influence. England was not a wine producer so access via the port town of Bordeaux on the Gironde meant big business for anyone investing in vines.
