The producer

The Tua Rita estate is located in Suvereto, Alta Maremma, in southern Tuscany, and was founded by Rita Tua and her husband, Virgilio Bisti, who purchased a small 2 ha property there in 1984. In 1992 they started bottling their own wine and hired one of Italy’s best consulting winemakers at the time, Luca d’Attoma.

Today, with 57 ha of organically farmed vineyards, Tua Rita is run by daughter Simena and her husband, Stefano Frascolla. In 2020, the estate was ranked 88th in the Liv-Ex Power 100 list of most powerful wine brands.

Tua Rita produces a range of stunning wines, includingof the most iconic, the Syrahs ‘Per Sempre’ and ‘Keir’, Bordeaux blend ‘Giusto di Notri’, Petit Verdot and Merlot blend ‘Lodano’ and Passito Pantelleria ‘Sese’. We currently list the Merlot cult label ‘Redigaffi’.

The wine

In 1994 Tua Rita produced the first vintage of cult wine ‘Redigaffi’ from 100% Merlot, and it was when the 1997 and 2000 vintages of Redigaffi was awarded 100 points, by Wine Spectator, that the wine world really started taking note. Redigaffi is produced under the IGT Toscana denomination and spends 18-20 months in new French barriques. Powerful concentration and outstanding complexity with intense floral aromatics, elegant structure and a long tapered finish, Redigaffi is an extraordinary vinous experience that shouldn’t be missed.

We choose our wines based on a range of criteria (see how we choose our wines) of which critic scores is just one. Rather than simply highlight the best score to promote a wine, our average critic score is calculated from the scores provided by several respected wine critics, who we follow for specific regions. They do not represent all critic scores and, wherever possible, we try and give more weight to more recent reviews. Where appropriate we consider market-based scores like Global Wine Score or Wine Searcher Average scores.

As a rule, we look to offer wines that achieve a 92/100 average critic score or better and frankly a lot of very good wines simply don’t make the cut. As a high-end provider we want to reflect that positioning in the quality of wines we offer. Such wines are only a tiny fraction of those generally on offer in the market. We believe that an average score is a more conservative and representative approach, but it is still subjective and only offered as a guide to our customers, who will (and should) do their own research. We will add individual critic scores to our website in the future.
