The producer
Fuligni was founded by Giovanni Fuligni, who bought a farm in the classic Montalcino zone (east of the town) in 1923. In 1971, Maria Flora Fuligni took over the family’s property, after her father passed away, and became the first woman in Montalcino to run a wine estate. Today the Fuligni farm has 100 ha of land of which 14 are planted with vines.
The wines, which lean towards the more traditional style with ageing mainly in large Slavonian casks, are famous for their fruit purity, velvety tannins and firm lifted freshness. When the quality of the fruit is not up to the estate’s high standard, the full production is declassified to Rosso di Montalcino (this happened for example in 2002).
The wine
Fuligni’s Brunello is derived from around 14 hectares of 15 to 20-year-old vineyards mostly located on the north-eastern slope of Montalcino. Each vineyard parcel is vinified separately, according to terroir and exposure, and varies with the specific Brunello being made. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats and is followed by four years of ageing, two and a half to three years in wood, and the rest in bottle.
More traditional in style, Fuligni’s Brunello is well-known for the red fruit juicy purity, silky tannins, and firm lifted freshness.
