The producer

Domaine Hubert Lignier is a prestigious family-run estate in Burgundy, known for producing some of the finest wines in the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation. Established in the late 19th century, the domaine has a long history of crafting exceptional Pinot Noir that embodies the unique terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. Currently managed by Laurent Lignier, who follows in the footsteps of his father Hubert, the estate is celebrated for its traditional approach to viticulture and winemaking. The vineyards are meticulously tended, with a focus on low yields and sustainable practices, ensuring that the grapes express the full character of their origin. In the cellar, the winemaking is minimalist, allowing the purity and complexity of the fruit to shine through. Domaine Hubert Lignier’s wines are renowned for their depth, structure, and remarkable aging potential, with their Gevrey-Chambertin bottlings being particularly prized for their balance of power and finesse. These wines are a true reflection of the domaine's dedication to quality and its deep connection to the terroir of Gevrey-Chambertin, making them highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs alike.

The wine

Domaine Hubert Lignier’s Regnard Gevrey-Chambertin 2005 is an exceptional vintage from a producer renowned for crafting some of Burgundy’s most expressive and long-lived wines. The 2005 growing season was characterized by ideal weather conditions, with a warm and dry summer that allowed the Pinot Noir grapes to achieve perfect ripeness while retaining excellent acidity. This vintage from the Regnard vineyard in Gevrey-Chambertin showcases the depth and complexity that the appellation is known for. The wine displays a deep ruby color and an aromatic bouquet of dark cherries, blackberries, and plums, complemented by earthy notes, spice, and a touch of smoky minerality. On the palate, it is full-bodied and richly textured, with fine-grained tannins that provide structure and the potential for extended aging. The balance of ripe fruit, acidity, and tannin is superb, resulting in a wine that is both powerful and elegant. The 2005 Regnard Gevrey-Chambertin is already showing beautifully, but it also has the capacity to evolve and gain even more complexity over the next decade or more, making it a prized bottle for Burgundy enthusiasts.

We choose our wines based on a range of criteria (see how we choose our wines) of which critic scores is just one. Rather than simply highlight the best score to promote a wine, our average critic score is calculated from the scores provided by several respected wine critics, who we follow for specific regions. They do not represent all critic scores and, wherever possible, we try and give more weight to more recent reviews. Where appropriate we consider market-based scores like Global Wine Score or Wine Searcher Average scores.

As a rule, we look to offer wines that achieve a 92/100 average critic score or better and frankly a lot of very good wines simply don’t make the cut. As a high-end provider we want to reflect that positioning in the quality of wines we offer. Such wines are only a tiny fraction of those generally on offer in the market. We believe that an average score is a more conservative and representative approach, but it is still subjective and only offered as a guide to our customers, who will (and should) do their own research. We will add individual critic scores to our website in the future.
