The producer

Domaine Dugat-Py is a highly respected and sought-after producer in Burgundy, renowned for its exceptional Pinot Noir wines from the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation. Founded by the Dugat family, who have been winemakers in the region since the early 17th century, the estate is now under the direction of Bernard Dugat-Py, who has elevated the domaine to cult status. The vineyards are meticulously managed, with a focus on low yields and organic practices, and many of the vines are exceptionally old, some exceeding 50 years. This dedication to quality in the vineyard is mirrored in the cellar, where traditional winemaking methods are employed to produce wines that are intensely concentrated, structured, and capable of long-term aging. Domaine Dugat-Py’s Gevrey-Chambertin wines are known for their deep color, rich fruit flavors, and complex layers of earth, spice, and minerality. Domaine Dugat-Py’s Vieilles Vignes Gevrey-Chambertin 2005 is a stellar vintage from one of Burgundy’s most revered producers, known for their deeply concentrated and age-worthy Pinot Noirs. The 2005 growing season in Burgundy was near-perfect, with a warm and dry summer that resulted in grapes of exceptional ripeness and balance. This wine, crafted from old vines (vieilles vignes) that are typically over 50 years old, showcases the power and complexity that Gevrey-Chambertin is famous for. The 2005 vintage is characterized by its deep ruby color and an intense bouquet of black cherries, dark berries, and plums, intertwined with earthy undertones, spices, and a hint of smokiness. Rather than simply highlight the best score to promote a wine, our average critic score is calculated from the scores provided by several respected wine critics, who we follow for specific regions. They do not represent all critic scores and, wherever possible, we try and give more weight to more recent reviews. Where appropriate we consider market-based scores like Global Wine Score or Wine Searcher Average scores.

As a rule, we look to offer wines that achieve a 92/100 average critic score or better and frankly a lot of very good wines simply don’t make the cut. As a high-end provider we want to reflect that positioning in the quality of wines we offer. Such wines are only a tiny fraction of those generally on offer in the market. We believe that an average score is a more conservative and representative approach, but it is still subjective and only offered as a guide to our customers, who will (and should) do their own research. We will add individual critic scores to our website in the future.
