The producer

Château Carignan is a historic estate located in the Bordeaux region of France, specifically in the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation. Dating back to the 15th century, the château boasts a rich history and architectural grandeur. The estate spans approximately 150 hectares, with around 65 hectares dedicated to vineyards that primarily produce Merlot, along with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Château Carignan is known for producing elegant and well-structured red wines that reflect the terroir of the region. The wines are typically characterized by rich fruit flavors, balanced tannins, and a capacity to age gracefully, making them a respected choice among Bordeaux enthusiasts.

The wine

Château Carignan 2019 is a standout vintage from this historic Bordeaux estate, reflecting the excellent growing conditions of the year. The 2019 vintage benefited from a warm and sunny growing season, which allowed the Merlot, the dominant grape variety, to reach optimal ripeness. This wine offers a rich and concentrated profile, with lush notes of dark fruits like blackberry and plum, complemented by hints of spice, cocoa, and subtle oak from careful aging. The tannins are firm yet polished, providing a solid structure that suggests good aging potential. Overall, Château Carignan 2019 is a well-balanced and elegant wine, showcasing both the power and finesse typical of Bordeaux, making it a great choice for both immediate enjoyment and cellaring.

We choose our wines based on a range of criteria (see how we choose our wines) of which critic scores is just one. Rather than simply highlight the best score to promote a wine, our average critic score is calculated from the scores provided by several respected wine critics, who we follow for specific regions. They do not represent all critic scores and, wherever possible, we try and give more weight to more recent reviews. Where appropriate we consider market-based scores like Global Wine Score or Wine Searcher Average scores.

As a rule, we look to offer wines that achieve a 92/100 average critic score or better and frankly a lot of very good wines simply don’t make the cut. As a high-end provider we want to reflect that positioning in the quality of wines we offer. Such wines are only a tiny fraction of those generally on offer in the market. We believe that an average score is a more conservative and representative approach, but it is still subjective and only offered as a guide to our customers, who will (and should) do their own research. We will add individual critic scores to our website in the future.
