Valdeorras

Overview

Valdeorras DO (established in 1957) is the easternmost wine growing region of Galicia, situated on the river Sil, and specialising in the native Godello grape variety, which accounts for a majority of plantings. Valdeorras borders Ribeira Sacra to the west and Bierzo to the northeast and given the inland location the area has a predominantly continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Altitudes range from 300 to 700 meters and soils vary from limestone in the northern part of the area, to ironstone and granite on the higher slopes and alluvial components on the lower slopes.

Key Grape Varieties

In terms of the white and apart from the white grape Godello, the region also has minor plantings of other native to Galicia varieties such as for example Loureira, Treixadura, Albarino and Dona Blanca. Mencia is the most planted red grape variety.

Food Pairing

In common for most Valdeorras white wines is that they all pair extremely well with meaty seafoods such as crab, lobster, scallops, halibut, and monkfish, while also being a great partner for white poultry in creamy sauces and simply enjoyed as an aperitif. The red wines from Mencia are super versatile and very good partners for everything from hearty stews and strong-tasting meats and sausages to tomato sauce, salads, pasta, risotto, and pizza.
