Rias Baixas

Overview

Rias Baixas is a wine Denominacion de Origen (DO) located in the Galicia region of north-western Spain. The DO was received relatively recently, in 1988, and since then the area has grown rapidly in popularity and renown for its signature grape variety, Albarino and its crisp aromatic white wines. Rias Baixas stretches along Spain’s coast with the Atlantic Ocean for around 100 km from around Santiago de Compostela in north to the Portuguese border in the south. In the east the region borders the Ribeiro DO. The climate is Atlantic influenced, with high rainfall and moderate temperatures, the topography consists of lush rolling hills.

Key Grape Varieties

Albarino is the leading grape variety of Rias Baixas and is sometimes blended with soupcons of other indigenous grape varieties such as for example Loureiro and Treixadura.

Food pairing

The crisp and saline white wines of Rias Baixas complement fresh and uncooked seafood especially shellfish incredibly well, but is also a delicious accompaniment for salads, cold vegetables soups such as gazpacho, with fresh goat’s cheese, or as aperitif along with Marcona almonds and green Gordo olives.
