Pommard

Pommard is renowned for producing the most profound, rich, and structured wines of the Cote de Beaune. In the past generic Pommard was often considered rustic compared to wines from the Cote de Nuits but more attention to viticulture and the renaissance of many traditional winemakers in the commune has made that a thing of the past … well, mostly.

Situated between Beaune to the north and Volnay to the south, the vineyards, interrupted only by the village of Pommard, abound in Premier Cru vineyards some of which vie for recognition as perhaps of Grand Cru status. While this will probably never transpire, vineyards such as Rugiens and the Epenots/Epeneaux in the hands of the best makers make outstanding wines worthy of consideration as such. Pommard is now much in demand as full-bodied Burgundies that can offer early gratification despite their ability to age gracefully for a couple of decades.

Les Rugiens & Les Rugiens Bas Premier Cru

12.66ha. Is this the Grand Cru of Pommard, indeed the southern Cote de Beaune?

Split between Haut and Bas, the latter is considered the better, and the only part potentially Grand Cru. But then the makers play a part in that role. Owned by de Courcel, de Montille, Faiveley et al. 

Clos des Epeneaux Premier Cru

5.23ha. One of the largest monopolies in the entire length of Burgundy’s Cote d’Or, with vines varying in age from 30 to 80 years, Clos des Epeneaux is renowned for outstanding wines exemplified by exotic spices. Clos des Epeneaux spans the border of Petits Epenots and Grand Epenots. It is the monopoly of the Comte Armand estate.

Les Grands Epenots Premier Cru

10.1ha. Les Grands Epenots flows from the border with Beaune almost to the village of Pommard and is part of the three vineyards that make up the larger lieu-dit “Epenots” – the name can be applied to wines from all three. 

Les Petits Epenots Premier Cru 

19.76ha. Rarely used on a label perhaps because “petits” may infer lesser, despite the vineyard being greater, this section of the Epenots is often considered the better. Producers tend to simply label their wines “Epenots”, either because they are a blend of both, or avoiding the “petits” name. The vineyard is owned by Domaine de Montille, among others.
