Nicolas Joly “Clos de la Coulee de Serrant”

The ‘Coulee de Serrant’ vineyard – located southwest of Angers in the heart of the Savennieres appellation – is one of only three single vineyard appellations in all of France (the other two being Romanee-Conti, in Burgundy, and Chateau Grillet, in the Rhone Valley).

Owned exclusively by the Joly family for decades, Coulee-de-Serrant was planted with grape variety Chenin Blanc by Cistercian Monks in the 12^th century and has remained thus ever since. Fast forward several centuries and a young Nicolas Joly, in 1977, decides to drop out of a career in finance and return home to the family estate. At the time he stumbled upon a book about biodynamics, which fascinated him, and the Joly estate has been farmed biodynamically since 1982.

Today Nicolas Joly runs the estate, with daughter Virginie, and is one of the most passionate advocates for biodynamics in the world, regularly hosting courses on the farming method for fellow producers from all around the world.
