Franck Balthazar

Originally founded in 1931 the domaine has been in the control of the eponymous Franck since 2002. 3.5ha of perfectly placed vineyards, on south-facing slopes, in the heart of Cornas that represents the soul of this domain. Balthazar also produces wines from other parts of the Rhone under their negociant label.

The wines from Cornas are juicy and enticing, but the pinnacle of the domaine is from 1 hectare of centenarian Petite Sirah vines in the ‘Chaillot’ vineyard. The vineyards are farmed organically, and all fermentations take place in concrete vats with whole clusters, which adds freshness and definition, and wild yeasts. Ageing is in old 600 litre demi-muid to preserve purity of fruit and terroir expression.
