Dr. Loosen

The Dr Loosen estate has been making wine in the Mosel Valley for over 200 years, with current owner – and according to many, ‘superstar winemaker’ – Ernst Loosen taking over the estate in 1988. Located just outside of Bernkastel, Dr Loosen today has around 50 hectares spread across some of Germany’s best vineyards, with land in amongst others, Erdener Pralat, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich and Urziger Wurzgarten. 80% of plantings are Riesling with many vines over 70 years old, and organic farming methods employed throughout.

Today aided by brother Thomas, Ernst Loosen has a traditional approach to winemaking, with a strong emphasis on letting the terroir and grapes speak for themselves. British wine publication, Decanter magazine, named him their “Man of the Year” in 2005, which speaks for itself in terms of global recognition.
