Burgundy

Overview

The Burgundy region is located in central-eastern France and consists of five sub-regions: with Chablis in the Yonne department in the north, to Cote de Nuits and Cotes de Beaune in the Cote d’Or department immediately south of Dijon city, and finally Cote Chalonnais and Maconnais are in the Saone-et-Loire department in the south.

Burgundy’s climate is mainly continental, with cold winters and short moderately warm summers, and the topography is characterised by rolling hills, the best of which have south-east exposure, and limestone soils.

Key Grape Varieties

The key grape varieties here are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, and much of the world’s makers of these grapes, look to Burgundy for know-how and inspiration. The finest iterations of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay come from the Cote d’Or department right in the heart of the region. The finest Pinot Noirs come from Cote de Nuits, where they produce juicy and medium bodied red wines of sensual texture and immense fragrance. Whereas the finest Chardonnays come from Cote de Beaune, where the wines are textural and full-bodied, and some of the most complex and balanced white wines in the world.

Classification

Burgundy’s classification system is divided into four levels, with Grand Cru at the pinnacle, Premier Cru below, and finally village- and regional wines at the base. The Grand and Premier Cru vineyards have received their status due to the superior exposure, soil, and position on the slope. Whereas Village and Regional wines are blended from grape material sourced from the entire village and/or region.
