Overview and History

Bordeaux as a wine district dates back at least to Roman times and was continued by the church through the Middle Ages. But its real boom came when Eleanor of Aquitaine married Henry II bringing the entire area under English influence. England was not a wine producer so access via the port town of Bordeaux on the Gironde meant big business for anyone investing in vines.

Overview and History

Is it all hype? Bordeaux, being the only port city in a major wine area, made the wines internationally accessible when others were not. It made the wines accessible to the Brits who, for centuries, were the most important market for fine wines. The Irish became even more involved as merchants and owners and other non-wine-growing countries – Belgium, Holland, Germany and eventually the USA – all provided markets for what the British called “claret”.

Bordeaux is located in the south-west of France, directly south of the Cognac district and north of the Bergerac region. The Bordeaux region surrounds the City of Bordeaux which is located around 95km up the Gironde River from where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. There are vineyards on both sites of the Gironde River and also on both sides of its tributaries Garonne (flowing south along the Left Bank) and Dordogne (flowing east along the Right Bank). Altogether the region covers 125,000 hectares, which is the equivalent of five times Burgundy or eight times Napa Valley.

Key Grape Varieties

Wines from Bordeaux are generally always blends of grape varieties, however there are differences in the proportions of the grape varieties used by the two main regions inside Bordeaux. The red wines are blends of different proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, sometimes with small amounts of Malbec and/or Petit Verdot. The white wines are blends of different proportions of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, sometimes with small amounts of Muscadelle and/or Sauvignon Gris.

Key Regions

We divide Bordeaux into the regions Left Bank, Right Bank and Entre-Deux-Mers, names which refer to the regions position in relation to the rivers. The longevity of Bordeaux’s popularity is because the wines are so damn good. They show the personalities of each commune and each vineyard and have the potential to age for decades.
