Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru

Recognised as a Grand Cru in 1983, Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru is situated at the very northern end of Haut-Rhin (southern part of Alsace), 17 km north of the commune of Colmar, and immediately north of the village of Bergheim. The 35-hectare vineyard with southern exposure and altitudes ranging from 220-320 metres, is planted to Gewurztraminer, Riesling, or Pinot Gris. The soil is marl-limestone bedrock covered with red calcareous clay with gypsum. Wines from here can either be varietal or a blend of the three varieties with up to 10% of either Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir or Muscat. Principal producers include Marcel Deiss, Sylvie Spielmann and Gustave Lorentz.
