Pommard

Overview

Pommard is renowned for producing the most profound, rich, and structured wines of the Cote de Beaune. In the past generic Pommard was often considered rustic compared to wines from the Cote de Nuits but more attention to viticulture and the renaissance of many traditional winemakers in the commune has made that a thing of the past … well, mostly.

Pommard is now much in demand as full-bodied Burgundies that can offer early gratification despite their ability to age gracefully for a couple of decades.

Classification

Situated between Beaune to the north and Volnay to the south, the vineyards, interrupted only by the village of Pommard, abound in Premier Cru vineyards some of which vie for recognition as perhaps of Grand Cru status. While this will probably never transpire, vineyards such as Rugiens and the Epenots/Epeneaux in the hands of the best makers make outstanding wines worthy of consideration as such.
